Taveuni, Fiji

February 2020. Our adventures across the South Pacific included a stop at Taveuni, Fiji – the location of the 180th meridian.

Our adventures were starting to focus on the difficulties of our ship, the Windspirit. The administration and crew were working hard to keep the ship moving in a forward direction. The cruise, although 30 days for us, was actually a “repositioning” route to Singapore, taking the ship to drydock for multiple repairs. We were informed that one of the engines needed repairs. It would turn out that we would spend three days anchored in the South Pacifc waiting for an engineer to arrive to instruct repairs.

February 2020 world news was tracking the spread of Covid 19. The engineer who was to arrive from Germany needed to travel to a destination that at the best of times was a two day journey.

As the island of Taveuni was a new stop for the Windspirit, the organized tours on land had not been tested, and as it turned out not typical to the standard of the Windstar cruise line.

We selected a tour of the island, with a chance to view island life, the town of Waiyevo, the flora, fauna and the 180th meridian, a line common to both the east longitude and west longitude, and the International Date Line.
